Quarter Square Triangle Blocks

Today we'll be making Quarter Square Triangle Blocks! These will eventually end up in a quilt project were calling our Orchard Garden Sizzix Sampler Quilt.

We'll be using:

Clover 240 Fork Pins
Aurifil Cotton Thread Solid 50wt
Clover Extra Fine Patchwork Pins
Liberty of London Orchard Garden quilting cotton - in stores this fall!
Sewing Machine
Wonder Clips

Ok, let's do this!

Firstly, lets make our Sizzix sandwich. Place your cutting pad down first. Next stack your die on top - foam side up. Place 2 fabrics on top of that, right sides together - making sure to cover up all of the die cut lines. I used two prints from the upcoming Cottage Garden line from Liberty of London - due out this fall. Thank you Jenni Smith for the chance to play with the line before release!

Roll your Sizzix sandwich through the machine.

Tada! Here are your pieces, all cut - dog eared and even paired up and ready to sew!

Place 2 pairs next to one another like the photo to ensure you end up with mirrored pieces. Clip at the beginning and end of each seam.

Chain piece your units together using a quarter inch seam allowance.

Roll open your seam.

Clip at each edge and use a fork pin to ensure the center seams come out matching perfectly. You insert the pin, one prong into each side of the seam line and then flip it over until and jhooshe it until it's aligned the same on the back.

Using a quarter inch seam allowance, join the two parts together making sure your needle avoids that pin.

Roll open your seam then repeat all the sewing steps for the other set.

Woohoo, 2 more blocks to add to our Orchard Garden Sizzix Sampler quilt!

Drunkards Path Quarter circle block - Sizzix Tutorial

Today we'll be making a drunkards path quilt block! This will eventually end up in a quilt project were calling our Orchard Garden Sizzix Sampler Quilt.

We'll be using:

The Orchard Garden Quilting Cottons by Liberty of London (in stores this fall!)

Sewing Clips

Sewing Machine

Ok, lets do this!

Firstly, lets make our Sizzix sandwich for the background pieces. Place your cutting pad down first. Next stack your background die on top - foam side up. Place 2 layers of fabric on top of that making sure to cover up all of the die cut lines. I used Essex Linen from Robert Kaufman. Finally, place your other cutting pad on top and your good to go!

Now roll it on through your Sizzix machine. A slightly askew angle works best!

Woohoo, just like that we've got our outter curves all good to go!

Next up is our quarter circle Sizzix sandwich! Pad down first, followerd by the die - foam side up - followed by 2 layers of different fabrics (Here are new prints from the upcoming collection of quilting cottons, The Orchard Garden by Liberty of London - thanks Jenni Smith!)  and the other cutting pad on top.

Now our inner circles are all set!

Fold your inner circles in half and use your seam roller to make a folding mark into the center of the rounded edge.

Now fold your outer curves in half and roll a folding center mark onto the curved edge.

Place your 2 opposing pieces, right sides together - line up the creases you just made and place a pin through them.

Line up each of the edges of your pair and secure them with another pin.

Sew around the curve slowly, making sure to avoid your pins while you zhush the edges of the seam to align all while maintaining your quarter inch seam allowance.

Now clip in about 1/8 of an inch around your seam using a scissor, making careful not to clip through your sew line.

Use your seam roller to roll your seam toward the Essex linen.

Flip over your block, roll along the seam to make sure it's super flat and then repeat these steps to make your other 3 quarter circle blocks.

Place your 2 different color quarter circle blocks right sides together and place a clip at the end of each edge. Use a fork pin to align your seams that match up by pushing both prongs around the thread line of the pieces until it is centered on both sides.

Sew along the edge using your trusty quarter inch seam allowance making sure to avoid hitting your fork pin with the needle.

Roll your freshly sewn seam open and repeat these steps for the other pair of quarter circles, making sure the other pair is matched so the colors will be staggered through the circle.

Line up your blocks, right sides together, clip each edge and use a fork pin at each seam to make sure they line up perfectly then sew together using a quarter inch seam allowance.

Roll open your seam.

And woohoo, your done! You've got a finished quarter circle drunkards path block! Happy dance optional :)

One block left to assemble πŸŽ‰

Happy Friday! Isn't having one more block to sew in a project the best feeling?! πŸ˜€

I hope everyone's had a great week!

There were a bunch of odds and ends laid out on my new @olfacreates cutting mat this morning so I sorted them out til they were picture worthy and took a πŸ“Έ 😁

I've got one block left to assemble in my latest quilt and I couldn't be more excited to join it together and finally get the full experience of what the quilt top will look like once it's all joined together! It's a remake of the one I had made over 2 years ago which will be a pattern in my upcoming book from @bluestarpress. Instead of using a solid black kona and batiks, this time I went for a softer look of Liberty Lawn paired with Essex Linen.

I'm hoping to finish up the top today, maybe pick out the fabrics for my first @brimfieldawakening block that the ladies had graciously sent over when they heard I was a big fan, sew the opening closed of the lavender sachet up in the right corner (which has been making my workspace smell so fresh and summery)

It's clipped shut to make sure it doesn't spill (again 🀣)

Seriously though, isn't the translucent cutting mat awesome?! Besides being pretty (which it has the looks 😍) I love how big it is! I mean look at all the stuff I was able to fit on it! It's 24x36, my fav cutting mat size because it fits perfectly into my workspace without wasting an inch of potential cutting space. I mean who wants to go smaller and have to gently move the piece they're cutting down with the risk of it shifting? Not me! πŸ˜‚ I've also got my fav new toy, my @violetcraft seam roller that came in a previous months @quiltybox - oh which reminds me!!! Our giveaway for this month's box ends tonight (Friday June 29th) at 9pm so be sure to enter if you haven't already! There a pretty shade of @aurifilthread on there that I'm debating using for quilting up the bad boy on the right, my favorite @loccitaneusa lotion ever (seriously - it smells like roses and has a rifle paper company design on it!) and a few of my new olfa frosted rulers (thanks guys! 😘)

Here's Keaton Quilts CEO, πŸ• Diane Keaton caught in a burst shot then turned into a GIF, winking

Happy weekend! πŸ’•

Peonies in bloom

Happy Tuesday!

Along with the warmer weather, another favorite perk of late spring here in New York is all of the beautiful flowers coming into season.

I picked up these peonies yesterday while out on a walk with πŸ• Diane. Seeing all the flowers starting to bloom in the parks had left me a bit jealous, so I decided to pick these up so I could enjoy some pretty πŸ’πŸŒΈ while I continue working on the patterns for my upcoming book from @bluestarpress. I'm definitely going to need to add an EPP project, just so I can sit outdoors and enjoy some of the springtime beauty while I sew together a prototype 😁

This is a big week for me as I'm revamping my sewing area, going through all my fabrics and notions, trying to sort them all in preparation for the arrival of my @theoriginalscrapbox workbox 3.0 πŸ˜€ I feel like a kid - the night before they head to Disney leading up to its arrival. I'm so excited, I can hardly stand it 🀣 I've always dreamed of having all my tools and fabrics all organized in a maintainable way and within arms reach and that dream is finally coming true! Everything is a bit of a disaster as I get organized so I wouldn't want you to see what's on the other side of the camera in these πŸ“Έ πŸ˜‚

Finally, here's a shot of CEO, πŸ• Diane Keaton, miffed that I'm taking shots of the flowers instead of tending to her need for never ending 2 hand pets.

I hope everyone's having a great week! πŸ˜‰

Our pattern in The 2018 Quilters Planner

I'm so excited! The delivery man buzzed this morning and I almost didn't get out of bed, but boy am I glad I did! πŸ˜€

He had for me my very first published pattern which comes included in the 2018 @thequiltersplanner. It's such a great feeling to be able to hold the book in your hands for the first time and flip through the pages. I shed a few tears of happy joy 🀣, danced a littleπŸ•Ί and then snapped this πŸ“Έ to share with you.Β

The pattern is called Diane's lavender sachet, and it's a quick, fun little project that you can whip up in no time. I included some of the beautiful shots of the sachet, taken by @nightquilter and of course some of my favorites of 🐢 Diane Keaton, who it's named after. I feel so blessed to be able to do what I love with my favorite little girl by my side. I need to give a huge thank you to all of you guys out there whose love and support made this possible! πŸ™πŸ’–

Here's a link if you'd like to pick up a copy the 2018 Quilters Planner where our pattern is featured

Octavian the πŸ™

He's last week's block in our little #keatonsawesomeSAL. After a bit of stress finishing up my last wheel quilt by its deadline (I may have procrastinated starting just a bit πŸ•ΊπŸΌ) I lost my sewjo so I figured what's a better way to get it back than head to a quilting retreat in beautiful Vermont?! πŸ˜€

My sewjo returned on arrival and Octavian is my first finish! This week's block will be Tony the turtle and I promise to have him done in no time! πŸ˜‰

I dressed Octavian up in some sweet Liberty Lawn from @alicecarolinefabrics for pops of color, some dark Robert Kaufman Manchester for his eyes and some Robert Kaufman Essex Linen in natural for the background.

I'm having a blast here and will make sure to go live a bunch from the retreat πŸ™†β€β™‚οΈ

After a great experience working with @artgalleryfabrics for my last color wheel, I was excited when @misterdomestic reached out and asked if I'd like to make another quilt, this time for his Sewing Party using their le vintage chic collection.

Diane's Lavender Sachet

So excited about having a pattern that I designed for this cute lavender sachet included in the 2018 year's Quilters planner!

I not only credit living in the East Village of New York City for my creative awakening but also for inspiring me to start my own small business. I love supporting all the little mom and pop shops around the neighborhood and one of my favorites is Sunny's Flowers. It's truly a family operation, run by Sunny, her husband and their son. You can tell that it's a labor of love for all of them as even if you come by right before closing, you will always be greeted with a smile and excitement in helping you arrange a bouquet to your liking. I feel so blessed to be able to do what I love and forever greatful for the support of those who are helping me live my dreams so I always try to shop local and small and help spread that love among other small business. I couldn't have gotten more excited when I saw Sunny adding a display of dried lavender to her shop one day. I picked some up and excitedly headed home with the perfect project in mind for it.

The planner which includes the pattern is up for preorder today! πŸ˜€

Binding Across America

Binding across America

I had always wanted to take a cross country trip and last week I finally got my chance. I flew from NYC to Chicago, taking in the sights for a few days (with a quick stop by the awesome @oakfabrics - I'll have a little video tour up once I edit it together 😊) then boarded the California Zephyr (Amtrak train) and took it all the way to San Francisco. I had planned to prep a bunch of my #mischiefquilt by @karenthediyaddict blocks for the trip because I thought EPP across America had such a nice ring to it 🀣 but alas all my trip prep left me with too little time so I figured why not bind this beauty while taking in the sights from the train and I'm so happy I did. πŸš‰
She uses 52 @artgalleryfabrics prints and I couldn't be more over the moon πŸŒ™ with how her scrappy white binding turned out.
It's hard to see in the picture but I'll be sure to find a closeup of it and post it to my blog/stories sometime soon. Thank you guys for all the input on helping me settle on the choice. I'm so happy with scrappy whites as they give it a fun little detail without drawing the eye away from the center ring. I've got one last photo to share of this quilt I took among the beautiful redwoods in California but figured I would save that for another post as I struggled to narrow it down to just these 10 photos. I wanted to show you the beautiful views from the train while I bound my girl.
I'm loving seeing everyone's Chuckles 🐠 blocks from our #keatonsawesomeSAL Awesome Ocean Sew-a-long! πŸŸπŸ™πŸšπŸ‹πŸ‘ This is week one so if you haven't joined in yet you've still got plenty of time! I'll share my 2 Chuckles on the denim background later this week.
I've also got a big giveaway coming up you won't want to miss and the reveal of my pattern that will be featured in the next @quiltersplanner so keep an eye out for that! Pre orders for next year's planner are live so reserve your copy today!
I hope everyone is having a great week!

Say hello to Chuckles!

πŸ‘πŸ’™πŸ πŸ’™πŸŸπŸ’™πŸ™

He's the first block up in our little sew a long for Elizabeth Hartman's awesome ocean!

I dressed him up in some sweet Liberty Lawn from @alicecarolinefabrics for the pops of color, a little #carolynfriedlander architextures for his highlights, some dark Robert Kaufman Manchester for his eyes and some Robert Kaufman Essex Linen in natural for the background.

This is only the first set of Chuckles as I'm making two quilts with the other one using different Liberty and Robert Kaufman Dapper denim for the background. I'll have them to show you later this week. It feels great to finally get started as I knew I just had to make this quilt the second I caught wind of it at market. I can't wait to see everyone's blocks and don't forget to tag your posts with #keatonsawesomeSAL!

Happy Monday friends! πŸ˜€

πŸ³πŸŸπŸ‹πŸ πŸ¦ˆπŸ‘πŸ™πŸ¦€πŸ¦‘πŸšπŸ¬

It's a squircle!

What do you think?

β€πŸ’›πŸ’šπŸ’™πŸ’œπŸ’• I decided I just had to make another color wheel, after my last one sold. As I was about to start assembling the pieces, I had this epiphany that I should try to push the design further a bit and this is what I came up with. Each side will have aΒ  additional 3 flat blades, making it less a circle and more of a.. squircle? πŸ˜‚ Now I just need to work on piecing it together.

Of course 🐢 Diane Keaton mosied on into frame and made herself at home.

Happy Friday friends!

Fighting the blues with rainbows

Isn't this Liberty rainbow brimming with cheer?
The past few weeks have been a bit tough with seemingly everything going wrong that could. Last Friday I decided that I needed some rainbows in my life to help cheer me up and it's worked like a charm πŸ˜„
I'm busy turning this UFO into a queen size beauty (her rainbow measures 70" square) so I'm adding some clean white borders to give the eye a place to rest.
I'm thinking of starting my little awesome ocean unofficial sew a long next week and have a huge 14 Liberty Fat Quarter giveaways to kick it off. I wanted to do it sooner but USPS decided otherwise. I would turn on post notifications so you don't miss out πŸ˜‰

Anyhoo, I hope everyone's having a great Monday and that it continues throughout the week! 😘
